Information that Won’t be Factored Into Your Credit Score

By John Campbell

When potential lenders look at your credit score they can quickly and easily determine how well you may manage a loan or new line of credit. A lot of information regarding your past and present debts is used to compute your score.

But what information won’t be factored into your own score? For the most part, information that isn’t present in your credit report and is irrelevant to your own personal credit history won’t be used. By law, any information that could be unfairly used by anyone to arbitrarily lower your score can’t be included. The color of your skin, your race, religion, national origin, sex and marital status will have no bearing whatsoever on your score. Other information that won’t be considered in the computation of your score includes:

• The location, value or condition of your home or place you rent.

• Interest rates you currently pay or have paid on any debts.

• Information regarding child or spousal support as well as rental agreements, as long as these obligations aren’t in default status.

• Information regarding any credit counseling you may be participating in or have previously participated in.

• Requests for your credit report initiated by you, an employer or lenders making promotional or administrative inquiries.

None of the information mentioned above can adequately predict your future credit management skills. Your credit score only reflects your credit history; if you’ve paid your debts on time, your debt-to-income ratio and any other relevant information that may determine the likelihood of you paying off future debts as required. Although your age and employment information will not be factored into your credit score, alternate risk scoring systems used by some lenders may factor in this information to a certain extent.

The only thing you should have to worry about regarding your credit score is the information contained within your credit report that may be lowering your score. Take care of any problem areas in your report and you should have no problems getting credit with acceptable interest rates as well as terms and conditions.
